Lakota my 9 year old husky

Just sitting here fighting back the tears. Lakota had a large lump removed off her hind leg a few weeks ago. Of course, it failed to heal and seemed to open and ooze daily. Waited to hear results and it tore my heart out. So, now she is having that leg removed and it is killing me. I know it is what needs to be done, but I worry that I will not get my loving, beautiful best friend back. I came to this site because what I had seen did help me, but now that the day is here it is not the same. I have seen nothing but great results but you always worry. Well, if anyone reads this I just want to thank everyone for this site and all the help it gives.

  1. Is she in surgery right now? If so, then the wait is agonizing but try not to focus on the what-ifs. Of course there are no guarantees w/ surgery but if she’s otherwise healthy she’ll probably come through it fine. And you will get her back! If you’ve spent time reading around the site, you’ll know it can be a rough few weeks post-amp. Some pups sail through, but it can be a real rollercoaster. So try not to get discouraged if that happens. She’ll make slow and steady progress, even if it doesn’t seem like it. And then one day you’ll realize that she’s back to her old self and you’ll be amazed. And of course she’ll still love you! That is what dogs do! They just get on w/ life. As long as you are there to love her and take care of her, that is all she needs.

  2. Hello and welcome. I’m sorry you find yourself here, but there are many of us here who have been where you are now. We all have felt what you are feeling and doubted that our pups would cope. I encourage you to find the forums and post there. You will get input here, but there are many more people who frequent the forums, and the new blog posts cycle through pretty fast.

  3. So sorry you have to be here. Under the circumstances, there is no better place ro be for first-time knowledge, support AND understanding! We understand all to well the kick in the gut, the panic, the fear, the disbelief, the second guessing!

We also understand the joy in seeing our dogs get back to living a life of quality with no more lain…a life full of more loving and spoiling than you coukd ever imagine possible!!

Recovery is no picnic. It took me almost three weeks , three looong weeks, before I could finally say I did this FOR my Happy Hannah and not TO her!!

We have several tripawd Huskys here, and they are incredibly resilient! One “f amous” Husky around here was an Alaskan sled dog…and yes, she resumed sledding! Sure, there were a few modifications, but she continued doing what she lpved! A d that’s all dogs care about, doing what they love, even with modifications! You’ll be amazed at how, even the most active dog in the world, loves the trade-off during recovery and tzking things slow of more couch time for tummy rubs and snuggles!

Stay connected. You are not on this journey alone, okay? We are right here by your side!

When is her surgery? Is it going on now? Js she spending the night?

Have you read all the e-books here? They will help you prepare. If you jave jardwood floors, buy some cheap no slip scatter rugs for traction.

Update when you can, okay? Lakota will have her sparkle back bigger and brighter than before!

    Love and hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

    PS…Grab some chocolate, it helps!!

  4. I’m so sorry it’s bringing you such heart ache 🙁 My boy Rams went through a similar thing. The initial shock took me a few days to get over and the stress of it all is still catching up with me. He had his leg removed 2 weeks ago, however he is showing signs now and then that he is coming back to his normal self. It’s going to be hard and it’s going to be an emotional roller coaster, but no doubt you will have your fun loving Lakota back. Just take things day by day and keep strong for your husky. I hope everything goes well for you and beautiful Lakota!

  5. Oh God, I’ve been there. Scared, crying, feeling awful worrying….I was there not too long ago. Actually I think I’m there a little every day. It IS scary but so many here will tell you…..they bounce back and don’t seem to mind. She will be in good hands with you, you will watch her like a hawk, make sure she’s not in pain, feed her, hug and kiss her, love her and trust me, they know how much you love them. Love helps them heal and you’re providing so much love. I’m praying for her and hoping everything is ok. Keep us posted.
